Thriston Lawrence is forging his own path in golf and life. Michael Vlismas
Socrates was not much of a golfer, but he knew something that in the case of Thriston Lawrence has proved more valuable than any swing thought, putting tip or course management strategy. The Greek philosopher’s maxim of “Know thyself” finds perfect expression in Lawrence’s life and career.
“I’m my own boss,” says Lawrence, who at the young age of 27 appears to have mastered an understanding of who he is and what works for him, especially inside the ropes.
From turning professional at the age of 17 despite a host of naysayers warning him not to do so and embarking on a career to become the best with no Plan B in his mind, Lawrence is very much his own man forging his own path in the game.
It comes through at the four DP World Tour victories he’s already collected, the way he handles unjust criticism, and even in his approach to practice.
“I’ve always been a guy who just loves to play golf. It’s not that I don’t want to practise, but I started this game by just playing a lot of golf. My father owned the pro shop at Nelspruit Golf Club so I was able to grab a golf cart whenever I wanted to and just go play. Living on a golf course made it really easy like that, and during school holidays I would wake up early and play 18 holes.

Toughest course played and why?
“Oak Hill at The PGA Championship last year. It’s such a ball striker’s golf course. Firm and fast greens with thick rough and tight fairways. It was brutal but amazing at the same time.”
One shot you will always remember
“The 5-iron I hit on 17 to the back right flag on my way to winning the BMW International Open. I pitched it just short of the slope and it released up to four feet for a birdie.”
Favourite fishing spot in the world
“Mokolo Dam about 40km from Ellisras. I know that dam well and I feel like I’m in heaven when I’m on it.”
If you could fish with anybody for a day, who would it be?
“I always love having my father next to me on the boat. But I would love to fish with Kevin VanDam. He’s probably the best in the world when it comes to bass fishing and is an icon of American fishing.”
Worst hotel experience ever
“One of the worst was at a Challenge Tour event we played in France. No Wi-Fi, a terrible bed, no taxis nearby. That one really stands out for me.”

“There were a lot of people who when I left school told me I was making a mistake. But I didn’t worry about a Plan B. I was out there trying to do what I wanted to do. I knew I was good enough and I was convinced I was going to make it. It’s never nice to hear the negativity because it comes from people who don’t have faith, but it also motivates you.
“Negativity and criticism is tough because you read a lot of things on social media and people’s comments. But I’m my own boss and the only one who can criticise me is me. The process of that mindset for me is to just try to be the best version of myself and not worry about the critics. I’m just trying to be a nice guy and positive towards other people and push them to become better, and to do the same myself.”
Lawrence is by admission not an overly technical golfer and even his process of setting goals is not an extremely rigid one.
“I’m not big on writing down goals. I want to play at all four Majors this year, try to get into the Olympics and play at the Presidents Cup. But I’m not too fazed about stats and small goals. I just try to do my best every week. I stick to the process and to what’s working. I believe you can change a few things around your golf like how you eat, how you train and how you plan your schedule. Those things make a difference for me. But at a tournament I play golf and then go back to the hotel.”

A goal that never changes, though, is his desire to be the best South African golfer of his generation.
“Being the best in South Africa is a big thing for me. I was lucky enough to be the first South African to be named the DP World Tour Rookie of the Year. I’ve also been the best South African on the DP World Tour rankings.
“I want to follow in the footsteps of Ernie Els and Louis Oosthuizen who were the best in the country in their era. They are role models to me. I want to be the best, and mentally I’m flying the flag high for the country and trying to lift South African golf and hopefully inspire another youngster out there.”
