CONSISTENCY IS KEY
Zander Lombard has established a top team and gameplan, which has shown in his tournament finishes. Michael Vlismas
When Zander Lombard says it, it hits you right between the eyes like a 1-iron: “I have built a solid game with no real weaknesses.”
Consistency is the badge of honour professional golfers wear with a quiet pride. It remains the final frontier in a game that promises nothing and which can be extremely fickle in its loyalties each week on Tour. So to have built the kind of consistency that Lombard has reached is to get to a level in golf akin to Morné Steyn being handed the match-winning kick and you can turn away, confident that you know exactly what’s going to happen.
“I take great pride in my consistency. The reason we play this game is to have that excitement of being in contention on the back nine on Sunday, and I’ve had great pleasure from that the past few months. Golf is fun at the moment,” says Lombard.
Since the season-ending DP World Tour Championship in 2023 through to the Dimension Data Pro-Am in early February, Lombard had finished no worse than tie-25th at 10 tournaments. He came close again to a maiden DP World Tour title at the Bahrain Championship presented by Bapco Energies.

What do you miss the most about South Africa when you travel?
“Living in Pearl Valley is a great lifestyle and I miss that. I just miss being at home when I get on to a long travel stretch.”
What’s the first thing you do when you get back home?
“Undoubtedly, every single time without fail, I buy droëwors and a Cola tonic. I sit and enjoy a few sticks of droëwors and a Cola tonic and water because that’s a true taste of home for me.”
What extras do you always have in your bag?
“My alignment sticks. I like putting the head covers of my woods on there. Also my rain jacket or rain pants, whether I’m playing in Scotland or in the desert.”
Any superstitions?
“None whatsoever. If something does start to manifest in my mind, I actually make a point of going and doing the complete opposite to try to eradicate it. But the one thing I always do is give my wife a kiss before I head to the 1st tee.”
What you like to do away from golf on Tour?
“My wife and I always try to find a good restaurant on Tour because life can be quite dull in the four walls of a hotel room. So we try to get out and still enjoy our life on Tour. We both like experiencing different cuisines and cultures.”

EARLIER DAYS
In November 2018 Lombard was crowned joint-winner at the European Tour Qualifying School and earned his Tour card for the following year.

For the past five years at least, Lombard has been meticulous in the work he has done to build the right team around him and to give himself access to exactly what he needs to have reached this level of confidence in his game.
“I’ve built a great team around me. Each of them is the best in their field and really adds value to my game in all departments. My psychologist Theo Bezuidenhout, my coach Grant Veenstra and my trainer Garth Milne are the best people for me. That really helps in solidifying my game.”
He’s also worked extremely hard on the mental aspect of his game and developed techniques from breath exercises to weekly maintenance strategies that ensure he’s where he needs to be when the first round tees off and is never left wondering.
“I found a lot of benefit from the Neuropeak team and breathing training. In my game and my life it’s important to breathe correctly, especially when you get anxious and stressed on the course. In my case it’s a four-one-four rhythm of breathing that gets my heart rate down and keeps my emotions in control so that I can be in a focused state of mind.

“I also have good maintenance boxes with my putting and swing – 15 minutes of check-ups every day for my alignment, my stroke, my pace. They are just little maintenance elements I’ve put in place to make sure that week-in and week-out I’m still where I want to be. That has helped in building my confidence going into the first two rounds of a tournament where I can eliminate any doubt that I haven’t prepared correctly.
“I feel confident I’ve put in the right work to play my best golf from the first round.”
Add this to Lombard hitting it 10 metres further, and straighter, with his driver and a putting game that’s improved dramatically, and you understand why he can say he’s proud of what he’s built.
It’s an overall game that’s primed to take advantage when that moment comes for him.
